Halloweekend

We celebrated this weekend, every minute of every day. On Friday Mason went to see Alan Kazaam at the Tecumseh Civic Center with his buddy Peyton, and helped make a birdcage disappear. I took the two little boys to the Family Centre for the alternative Halloween party, where they bounced and I panicked trying to keep my eyes on them both in the middle of hundreds of children. We made it through the pre-movie trivia for "How to Train Your Dragon", and then the boys were done sitting so we headed back home.

Saturday began with the last soccer game of the season, and it was definitely time to throw in the towel. I froze watching Mason defend his goal, and he froze defending it.
After the game we got ready for the big sleepover, three little boy friends plus our three boys makes for a wild and crazy night.
We played games, made our own pizzas, played more games, had cupcakes and then got down to the business of "sleeping over" (which I now know involves scary scooby-doo cartoons, popcorn, pillow fights, fart noises and very little actual sleeping).

By Halloween proper the boys were all exhausted. Ashton took a nap, and poor Blake fell asleep while he was chewing at the dinner table. He never made it into his costume, but slept 13 hours straight. Mason and Ashton had a successful night trick or treating, and I'm happy to report that the Halloween Witch tradition survived another year at our house, although we did have to concede more than just one piece of candy to each boy.
Monday feels like a nice break after our fun-filled weekend.

Recovery

We are still recovering from our long weekend without Sean-Daddy. He left early last Thursday and returned late-late Sunday night, and the boys were so happy to see him Monday morning! We tried to fill our time as best we could without him, but it was truly hard for all of us. Thursday Grandpa joined us for soccer practice and dinner. Friday Mason spent some time with a friend and learned how to build and launch rockets, which all the boys got to watch blasting off. Saturday we went to Carpenter Farms to get pumpkins, and discovered a truly wonderful fall playland- we will definitely go back. The boys played in the "corn box", the hay room, the petting zoo and among the pumpkin patch itself. They rode ponies and had ice cream, but we never made it to the hay maze or hayride.
Sunday I took the boys the the apple-umpkin festival in T-town, and it was a miserable failure of an afternoon. After the train ride Ash cried, because it was "sooo boooring". All weekend we had our friend cocoa bean visiting, the friendly classroom guinea pig.
All of the boys loved to feed her carrots and pet her, but Blake was especially head over heels!

We are back from our Saugatuck weekend, all with a little more color and a lot of good memories under our belts. We went to the beach, went to the pool, ate Hercules hotdogs and shopped at the Sandcastle. The kids played arcade games, sardines, hide and seek, bubbles and the DS. We went to the park, had pizza, ordered gourmet bar food to go and indulged in some gelato and American Spoon spreads. It was a great trip, in a perfect, open, airy rental house that I'm sure we will stay in again. I am tackling the ten loads of laundry we accumulated (in one weekend?!) and the kids are looking forward to their last, short week of school before summer time.

Right before we left for vacation Mason had his first field day at school, it was so much fun to watch, and the kids were thrilled to be outside all day long.

We are counting down the days left of school, (23 after today) and the number of soccer games left in the season (6 for Mason and 3 for Ashton) while enjoying the spring thunderstorms. Mason and I are working on book three of the wimpy kid books, Ashton likes to follow along too. Summer camps are scheduled, and the boys are excited. Mason is doing golf camp and art camp, Ashton chose animal camp with a field trip to a farm.

We've had some exciting things going on here. A *big* birthday, a super-fun swimming party, Mason's new smile, two first-of-the-season-soccer games, an awesome report card and we've started some indoor planting- sunflowers and watermelons. whew!
The soccer games were brutal, I cannot emphasize how bitterly cold and windy it was on Saturday. Fortunately Mimi came over to stay home with the boys who weren't playing while I watched the one who was. I went home between the games to get my long down coat, a fleece blanket, and a refill of hot coffee. Cold be darned, the boys were still amazing. Ashton scored the only goal for the red team, and he puffed right up like a little penguin he was so proud of himself. He loves to hear the parents shouting his name, that's clear. I should add that his golden second half came after a first half filled with snot, tears, and him standing statue-still on the field or sitting out on the sidelines under a blanket. He gets the award for most improved hands-down. Mase played goalie most of his game, and didn't give up a single goal. He was acting like an old pro, at ease on the field. The first school soccer game is after school today, and Mimi is going to come and watch Mason play with his St. Joe's buddies.

The beautiful spring weather has caused me to avoid the basement (and the computer) like the plague. Who wants to be in a dark chilly basement when the birds are singing are there are power wheels to be ridden? Here are pictures of some of the things we've been doing; the train show, an impromptu after school picnic, our joyful return to the park.

Blake likes to kiss himself in my closet mirror, and relishes attention from Mason when he is home from school.

I don't have pictures of Ashton's yellow belt testing, but he was amazing. He tested by himself in front of a roomful of students and parents, and was declared "awesome" by the black belt he tested with.

Soccer is starting soon, Ashton will play real games this year (!) and Mason is playing for St. Joe's and parks and rec in Tecumseh. I want to fit in some swimming lessons at the center before summer is upon us, but we'll have to see how busy we feel.
We're off to the last basketball game of the season, and Suepy is coming! Enjoy your weekend warmth while it lasts...

We made the most of our daylight hours this weekend. Of course, Blake managed a cringe-worthy face-plant on the sidewalk. It was almost as bad was the spectacle we made getting haircuts in town- all at the same time. Blake screamed as much as he did for his first haircut, but added exorcist worthy head spins. His head looks hacked-at, face included.
Mason looks like one of the Beatles, but it's growing on me, and he can see his schoolwork now, so we're happy. Ashton just looks adorable.
In other news; Mase and I LOVED Alice in Wonderland, Suepy did too, I would definitely see it again. Rome came to spend the night Friday and the boys had a great time with him. Blake has taken to him in particular, and followed him from room to room.
This Friday Ashton has a free day, and we are all going to enjoy a free movie at the Centre. Two more basketball games, and we have our fingers crossed it's as nice as this weekend was!

Both boys had so much fun at basketball today, it was wonderful to watch. After Mason's game we made a beeline for the pool. All three boys had fun splashing around, and they even got me on the waterslide.
We are taking it easy for the rest of the day, we're worn out!

We have lots of new news to share. Valentines day was wonderful. The boys each got an extra-special book and some heart-shaped truffles and Sean and I enjoyed a night out with friends, indulging in some rich food and drink for the first time in a long time.
Friday the boys had a day off of school, so we took them all to the Centre and played basketball in the racquetball courts. Sean and I were even able to sneak in some workout time while the boys ran crazy on the courts. Blake is getting better and better with a babysitter, and Sean and I are taking full advantage. Friday night we went to the Croswell for the dueling piano show while the boys stayed with their favorite sitter, Tanya. They convinced her to bring her Nintendo over and had a Mario-playing competition.
Saturday brought another round of basketball games for the bigs. Ashton had a rough time and came home early, fortunately his coach is wonderfully understanding and we will try again next week. Mason played his little heart out this week, he is a joy to watch. He plays a game within a game, trying to run circles around the court to shake off the opponent who is guarding him. I can't help thinking of the family circle cartoon and the crazy dotted-line trails Billy leaves all over the yard/neighborhood/house. That's what Mason's path would look like on the court if you could track it.
Today we all went to Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Zingermans together. It was nice enough to eat outside in the tented picnic area, the warm sunshine and good food was the perfect end to our afternoon outing. Ashton is my little foodie buddy, and he and I snuck off to taste-test the spring gelatos and gourmet chocolates while Mason and Blake chased the birds around the picnic area and Sean packed up.
I almost forgot- Blake pooped on the potty! I didn't go so far as photographing it for his baby book Kate-Gosselin style, but I did "save" it for Sean to see when he got home from work (is that gross?). That's the top headline at our house this week!

We went sledding! Mason's parent-teacher conference ended at 1:30, so we sprang Ashton early and headed to the hills. We had the whole place to ourselves, and Blake LOVED flying down the hill.

Mason and Sean-daddy are still out on the hill. Ashton, Blake and I headed back to prepare some "hot toco" and warm our toes and fingers. What fun!

Our snow day earlier in the week was fun too, but no snow was involved. We visited Sean's office to get all of our adjustments in while it was quiet, went swimming at lunchtime, and spent the afternoon in the library coloring valentines and reading books. We ended the day with Tae kwon do, where Ashton was the dodge ball king. Ki-yup! It was nice to have all three boys home all day, Blake hardly knew what to do with himself, he was so excited to play with his brothers.

All of this talk of snow has got us excited!
The boys and I secretly have our fingers crossed for a snow day Wednesday, and are tentatively planning a sledding trip for Friday. Hopefully we can even get Blake out on the hill this time.

The open house was wonderful, Mason proudly showed me all of his different classrooms and introduced me to his favorite teachers. Computer class is the hands-down favorite, with gym and art competing for second place. Mase showed me EVERYTHING, even trying to drag me up to the attic. I'm glad he has settled into his school year, he seems to be enjoying it much more now, and it shows in his report card.

Both boys had their first games on Saturday, but Ash missed his to attend Gavin's birthday party. He had a great time at the party, it was one of the largest parties I have been to yet- there must have been forty children there. We bounced, played ski ball, air hockey, inflatable T-ball, then ate some cake and left a little early to watch Mason in his game.

Sunday was the big birthday dinner for Sean, and the first "normal" food we've eaten in more than a month. We made prime rib, mashed sweet potatoes, wild rice and cashew broccoli. For dessert we had berries and homemade whipped cream, which was thick enough to hold Sean's birthday candle.

The boys were so tired from the weekend that we shipped them off to bed at 6:30, none the wiser.

It's a long, busy week already. Monday tae kwon do, today I took the boys to cash in their piggies and open savings accounts after school (note to myself, do that much more regularly and it won't take two hours of super-human patience). Tomorrow tae kwon do again and the big open house at school. I'm not sure how we are managing that yet, oh- and it's our anniversary! We're having a romantic lunch out at Evan's Street- for three.

We had a wonderful weekend visit with Uncle Rome. The boys worked hard to make sure he didn't have a moment's peace during his stay. We played lots of Wii (even mom!) and enjoyed birthday celebrations for Papa and Grandpa while Rome was here.
The boys had their testing last Saturday, with Uncle Rome, Sean-daddy and Papa in the audience cheering them on. The 'promotional' ceremony is tomorrow, and (shhhhh..., we aren't supposed to know) Ashton is being awarded student of the month in addition to advancing in rank. We are SO proud! I will try to get some pictures, I expect he is going to be one very excited little boy. Saturday brings the first basketball game for both boys, and then a trip to the Museum. It will be good timing, because Mason's class is studying dinosaurs in science right now. Speaking of school, Mason is also learning how to put together a power point slide presentation, (something I didn't learn until college), and he is reading, reading, reading up a storm.
Ashton finally returned to school today, after three days home with pink eye and general yuckiness. His return is just in the nick of time, because tomorrow is the big play date with Gavin that he has been waiting not-so-patiently-for.
Busy, busy days, all the better to help us forget the cold.

We are keeping busy in an attempt to make the winter pass quickly, but as it always seems to this time of year, time has sloooowed down. The boys are super excited to have Uncle Rome visit for the weekend, only a tiny bit of the excitement is due to him bringing his Wii (ha). Hopefully I can coax all of the game-playing boys outdoors for the ice-sculpting festival this weekend.
Mason and Ashton are testing in tae kwon do this Saturday, this time for their high-orange belt, which means they get a cool patch on their belt. Basketball starts February 6th, so you will find us at the Y every Saturday cheering them on.
Blake is keeping me busy, trying as hard as he can to do everything his big brothers do. He has become a master imitator, and a force to be reckoned with.
With all of the activity, we hope to look up and see April.

We had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, but it seemed faster than ever this time around. Aly visited for one quick night, and it seemed like Uncle Derk and Aunt Arika were in and out faster than Santa himself. We did a few new things; a Christmas dinner wine tasting (thanks, Derk and Dara), ice skating with the boys and spent New Year's in Springfield.
Now we are trying to adjust to cold, early mornings and being back in school. Thank goodness for my Snuggie!

We are home, we are happy.
Thanksgiving was wonderful, the brined turkey was delicious and the leftovers were sent home with Uncle Rome so our fridge would be empty before the big trip. I wish I would have taken some pictures, it was a lovely celebration, the only hitch being the children's table. Turns out, even the children don't want to sit at the children's table.
We had an energetic, fun-filled exciting vacation. Sea World, Aquatica, The Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party to top it all off. We took so many pictures that it will take me a while to load them all on the computer, but I did make prints so I can subject my friends and loved ones to 200 (or more, I'm estimating) vacation photos.
Lots and lots of fun, but next vacation we will probably plant ourselves on a beach somewhere. All of the roller coasters, water slides, parades and exotic animals, and what is Mason's favorite part of the trip? "Catching Geckos. riding the escalator. swimming"
When we got home we caught up on the Lego Advent Calendar and then went to the Santa brunch with Grandma and Papa the next day. The older boys were great with Santa, and coveted the m&m filled candy cane he gave them. Blake was a little more hesitant with the big man but he loved the candy cane too. He thought it made a cool sound when he shook it.
We have the first day back at school under our belts, and are making progress swapping turkeys for tinsel.

The boys have been busy. Here they are testing for their orange belts. Both boys were AMAZING. They tested in a room full of watching eyes, in front of a panel full of intimidating, unfamiliar black belt judges, and in complete silence, yet I had more butterflies in my stomach than they did. The promotion ceremony is tomorrow, and both boys are excited to receive their new belts.

Mason has been a guitar-playing fool, if you use the word 'playing' loosely. We are looking for a teacher so Mason and Sean can learn to play together.

Both boys have been growing at an alarming rate, Mason more than an inch since July plus two new adult teeth, and Ashton almost TWO INCHES since July. The amount of food they pack away makes their growth less surprising.

Never one to be outdone, Blake steals Ashton's Tae kwon do jacket and practices his ATA punches.

Balmy 70 degree weather, loads of fun new books, games and toys... it must be Christmas in July. Mason was very happy, very spoiled and very high on sugar yesterday. Sean and I went to school to decorate for and participate in the classroom Halloween party. The kids had a skeleton scavenger hunt, played pass the pumpkin, and enjoyed lots of spooky treats. right after the party we took two little buddies of Mason's home with us, and Peyton and Brennan met us at the house for some birthday fun. They made caramel apples, played 'snap apple' and ate mummy dogs. After cake, gifts and lots of crazy running around, all of the adults were ready for bed.
Today we got to sleep in and then spent the morning lazily assembling new Legos and reading new books. Now it's nap time before the big event- trick or treating!

Here is Mason's new smile, and did you know that the Tooth Fairy's going rate is now $1.00? Mason came home from school with a little tooth-shaped box on a string Tuesday, pretty exciting stuff.

The boy's halloween costumes came in the mail yesterday, along with some birthday gifts for Mason and party invitations for Ashton, so our excitement level has been on overdrive.

A show-stopping weekend

We packed it in this weekend, starting with a traumatic but oh-so-cute big boy haircut for Blake. We picked up the bigs from school Friday and went straight to Ann Arbor to see the much-anticipated Where the Wild Things Are with Suepy, Mimi, Jerome and his girlfriend Angie. Blake even watched most of the show, the third child gets to do everything earlier. After the movie we went to eat at the Palm Palace, where the boys played with Wiki Stix and Ash made moves on Angie.
Saturday we left Blake with Meems and took Suepy to the Valentine. The theater was filled with children, and we had a great surprise when we realized there were six different books being acted out instead of just one. After the show we hung out with PJ and Mimi until they looked *slightly* frazzled, and then we went to Panera for dinner. We didn't get home until almost bedtime, and we were all ready for it.
Sunday we finally got our pumpkins, at Houpt's. Blake had his first pumpkin patch experience. The boys went through the haunted pirate's ship, played spooky putt-putt, slung gourds and bounced. Now all we need to do is find time to carve our squash before Halloween.

Today was a freakishly good day. Sean-daddy is home, the boys have been wonderful, everything is just good. Both boys started off on the right foot this morning with BIG breakfasts of waffles and sausage. Mason polished off 8 mini waffles with yogurt and 5 pieces of sausage. I thought he would never stop.
Instead of dragging their feet both boys wanted to get to school quickly to show off the boards they broke at the festival. They couldn't even ask for cartoons, because all of a sudden we have no DirecTV. That solves that problem. The house is quiet, but until Survivor night (otherwise known as Thursday) I don't think we will miss it much.
After school Mason breezed through reading, vocabulary flash cards and practiced for his spelling test. He focused so well that we were done in record time and had an hour and a half to play before Tae Kwon Do.
At Tae Kwon Do both boys did such a wonderful job, they LOVE when Master Sandoval teaches because he commands respect but is also very silly. They had their 'listening ears' on, and it showed. Even though there was no class time for a game, they had so much fun they chatted my ears off all the way back home. Both boys are eligible to test for their next belt in early November, and they both want to try. Mason has already daydreamed his way right through the ranks to black belt, of course. He will have to settle for orange for now.
I almost forgot- Blake ate today! Maybe he was copying Mason, maybe I finally made something he liked the taste of, I don't know but I am so happy. He had several small servings of dinner. I feel like I crossed some sort of finish line.

Fall festivities

Apple picking, wagon rides, the decorated forest, bouncy pumpkins, apple butter tasting, pony rides, the big slide, animals to pet and feed, and hay to play on. Mimi and Suepy came for the soccer game and stayed for lunch and the festival. It was a great time, and we did so much that the boys almost forgot how much they are missing their dad. Almost! Sean has been gone since Thursday morning and will be home after 1:00 tonight. We can't wait to see him again.
Today the boys will go to the Apple-Umpkin festival downtown with a sitter while I go grocery shopping with Blake. We all win!

Homework and the holidays

Mason has homework every day this year, at minimum it is reading for at least fifteen minutes and at most we've had spelling, vocabulary, sight words, math and reading. It seems like so much to me! He is reading better than ever and seems capable of all that has been thrown his way, so I think it's a necessary thing. We scored two perfect student drafting desks from Uncle Brad this weekend and set them up in the boys' room today. They are the perfect separate-but-equal (and we all know how important that is) homework spaces for each boy. Ashton doesn't actually have homework yet, but he likes to pretend he does when Mason does, and often practices his printing while Mason works on his assignments.
Yesterday was Suepy's birthday (Happy Birthday, Suepy!) and Mason was so excited to give her his gift. What it is, I can't really say, but I can tell you that he knit it himself, wrapped it up himself and finished it off with a homemade card. Truly it is the thought that counts, and I can't think of anyone more deserving of all of the little-boy joy that was wrapped up into the preparation and presentation of that gift. Ashton missed breakfast because of his last soccer game (which was rained out) but is excited to celebrate with Suepy too at When you Give a Pig a Pancake. Mason, Ashton and I are taking Suepy, but poor Mimi has to stay back with Blake. Today was a wet and chilly day again, and we only left the house to visit with Grandma and Papa for a while. We had a wonderful visit; the boys made blanket forts, rode on the gator, and were all ready for a nap by the time we left.
Halloween is the other constant theme in the household (aside from homework). So far the line up is:

I'm still rooting for Mason to be Harry Potter, but the coolness factor of Wolverine's claws seems to be higher than Harry's wand. Mason decided the house needed a little more Halloween ambiance, and so took it upon himself to decorate. He found the box of decorations we had left over from his haunted house birthday party, and we to town. It is very... festive.

Sean is leaving before the crack of dawn on Thursday for his tournament, so send some good luck his way, and some patience mine.

Celebrations, Sniffles and Snuggles

Homecoming was so much fun this year! We stayed over at the college longer than we ever have in the past, and took advantage of all of the kid-activities. The boys bounced, rode the train, scored balloons and treats, and visited the petting zoo set up on the lawn. Homecoming night was great too, but we never did make it to the game!

On Sunday Mason, Ashton, Blake and I started to feel a little crummy, and by Monday we were all in 'bed'. I have never felt so sick (in the last ten years, anyway) and I had three boys feeling the same way to take care of. We are on the mend today, knock on wood, but all still at home.
Today Blakers got a wonderful surprise in the mail, a beautiful, cozy, snugly soft blanket from Aunt Sandy. He has been wearing it around the house like a Pashmina all afternoon.

Cross your fingers for us that all boys will be back in school tomorrow and I can rest. We are wishing for a slow, healing week.

Once the weather turns chilly in the mornings we know we have a limited time left to appreciate the sunny afternoons. I think that's part of the reason fall is so energized; we are trying to squeeze it all in before the long gray winter.
Mason and Ashton are getting into a groove at school. It's busier, longer and more difficult, but we are adjusting. I have been having as much difficulty with the changes as they have. Getting out the door earlier is the toughest part, but I am also struggling with Mason's schedule. It sounds like a High School schedule to me; with Spanish class, Language Arts and Gym/Music/Art only appearing once a week. I can't keep straight what teacher he has or what room he is in and when.
Weekends are extra enjoyable now that the boys are in school, because they are happy to have a couple of days at home. Sean and Ashton went to play at the driving range after school Friday, and then we went to Tecumseh's football game to watch Peyton cheer at halftime. The boys were so excited to be up so late, they LOVED the game, loved the crowd and the popcorn, and had a fantastic time all around. I don't think they even realized that we made a hasty exit as soon as the little cheer show was over. Saturday Ashton played soccer and then we had a quick lunch before heading to the movie theater to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Three moms sat behind the four boys, who felt pretty grown up with their own popcorn and a whole row of seats to themselves. We all loved the movie, Mason was the only boy who noticed that it was not at all like the book.
Last night Mason and I read the final chapter of the first Harry Potter book. I loved it just as much as he did, and had to keep myself from reading ahead. Mason was so enchanted by the story (ha ha) that we borrowed the movie and watched it first thing this morning. I can't wait to start the second book, it's been a wonderful treat to share with my Mase.
Another full week ahead, this is my favorite time of year!

Getting our Soccer Fix

We've been enjoying Tae kwon do, but, well, it's just not soccer. There is nothing like the feel and smell of fall soccer, the crisp but sunny morning games and cheering for your little guy. Mason decided not to play at St. Joe's this season, which makes me feel equal parts relief and disappointment. Lukily Ashton is playing, but let's face it, tot soccer is not the same breed. Only two kids showed up for the first game (the only two boys on the team, I can't help but add) so they merged with the blue team (Bren Bren's team!) and had a good, if unorganized, time.

Back in the Saddle

We are adjusting nicely to the new school routine, but everyone is a little bit tired. Starting the school day at 8:00 instead of 8:30 and ending at 3:15 instead of 3:00 has made a big difference for Mason. He says "Mom, first grade is looong". This year he has many different teachers throughout the day, a desk, a uniform, and no more snack or rest times.
Ashton is savoring being one of the "big kids" in his 3-6 preprimary classroom. He knows the teachers, the materials, the routine; and that makes him comfortable and happy.

Our balloon trip was cancelled AGAIN due to weather, and rescheduled again. It will happen, one of these days. The upside of the rainy chilly weather we've been having is all of the fun and cozy activities it has inspired. We have been visiting the library regularly, and the boys checked out some classic movies (Pinocchio and 101 Dalmations) along with some audio cds (At oZ mysteries) and books. We spent the afternoon baking chocolate chip and walnut cookies yesterday, and passed them out to everyone we came across.

I had knitting class this morning and eagerly left the boys with dad for some quiet time to myself. I have two main projects going right now; teeny tiny mittens for one niece, and a pretty pink hat for the other. After I got home the boys took advantage of a break in the rainy weather to spend time at the driving range. Mason and Ashton went through buckets of balls, and kept on putting after they returned home. Blake and I cuddled and nursed and nursed and cuddled on the couch while they were gone, and watched a movie that the other boys would not have appreciated.

After lots of fun with the boys we went out to dinner with some friends for an adult meal, which comes with uninterrupted adult conversation (free of charge!) in Ann Arbor. It is the first time Blake has had a babysitter for any length of time, and I was more than a little nervous. When we got home all three boys were sound asleep, and I am relieved and encouraged. The girls were completely enamored with Blake, he pulled out all the stops. He has become a big kisser and cuddler, and loves to show off his standing and walking tricks.

Monday was the first "real" day of Tae kwon do for the boys (uniforms and everything!), and it was the best class, I'm so glad that Sean and I were both there to watch. Tuesday I took the boys to goodwill, then to the library, and then Chuck-E-Cheese. I said I would never go there, and I still wouldn't let them eat there, but the place itself was just pure kid fun. The perfect half-day getaway.

Today we went to the park EARLY to beat the rain, and then it's Tae kwon do day two while Dad is out golfing. Tomorrow Grandpa visits for dinner, and Friday is (we hope) our big balloon adventure. Saturday Tanya our babysitter takes on all three kids so we can have a double date, she is brave. By my count that leaves us with nine days left to enjoy before it's time to go back to school. Very bittersweet.

We finally made it to the zoo to see the new "Nature's Neighborhood" children's exhibit. We spent most of our morning there, and the boys, Suepy and I had a great time. We saw so much it's hard to say what we liked the best. The boys made dog biscuits, watered the garden, climbed a spider web, pretended to be bees, watched ants at work, brushed guinea pigs, visited the aquarium and rode the train. Yep, we were tired! So tired in fact hat we surrendered the rest of the afternoon to movies and candy (shhh!) with Mimi before dinner and bed. The boys and Lilly (Suepy's dog) had a competition to see who could wear who out the most, and Blake kept us busy climbing and practicing his walking.

Mason has been begging me to teach him how to knit ever since I started. I keep trying to explain that I can barely knit myself, much less teach someone else. Today at my class I picked up a knitting "mushroom" type device that knits long chains or tubes and is easy to learn how to do. Mason had it down in minutes, and was hard at work for much of the afternoon. He didn't want to stop knitting to go to Tae Kwon Do!
What a wonderful partner he will be someday, he could knit a sweater to protect you from the cold, and break out his tae kwon do skills to protect you from an assailant. The "wonder knitter", (real name), is pink and sparkly, but Mason didn't even notice. he has a head full of ideas of things he wants to create. Here's a sampling: a whip, a snake, the longest necklace in the universe or at least in this neighborhood, a belt, a handle, and a "thing that wraps around your neck".

Horrible pictures, I know, but sometimes it's easier to grab your phone than your camera. Blake is taking steps, and he looks like a baby frankenstein. Slow, unsteady, arms out for balance. Mason and Ashton are delighted with this development, and drop what ever they are doing to applaud and egg him on. In the second picture Blake is caught up in the spirit of it, and is applauding himself.

Sometimes a new box of crayons is just the trick on a rainy afternoon. Blake colored for the first time. I love the crayola twistables because they don't snap with pressure and Blake can't eat too much of them before being discovered.

Both boys had a great time at bible school, even though Mason really did not want to go this morning. The three free hours were wonderful! Blake and I took a bikeride, did laundry, cleaned out the garage and got lunch ready all before it was time to pick the boys up. Tonight we have round two of Tae Kwon Do- Keee YA!

We're Biking, Baby

We are hard at work squeezing the most out of the last days of summer that we can.

Blake is big enough for the bike seat this summer, and he loves to ride. He hogs the handlebars and leans into the turns, sings when we cruise around and hollers when we stop. Around the block isn't enough anymore, we have crisscrossed this town during our evening bike riding adventures.
Mason dealt me a tough blow when he told me he didn't really want to play fall soccer this year. He said he would go to just practices or just games, but not both. Ash decided he didn't want to play either (killing me!) but he changed his mind just before the deadline, so I will have at least four tot-soccer "games" to look forward to.

Both boys expressed an interest in Tae Kwon Do, so I took them to the ATA Blackbelt Academy to observe. Ashtons little legs were just itching to kick, jump and run, and Mase was mesmerized. After observation I let them go to a class to see how they liked it. Both Mason and Ashton LOVED the 'test' class, and we will try two more before committing to actual classes. I was so proud of both of them, they had to walk into a group of kids and instructors that they didn't know, who were all wearing Tae Kwon Do uniforms (they had jammies on) and try to do something they had never done before. I could see that Mason was feeling very vulnerable, but he stuck with it, again, SO PROUD! Ashton just had fun, he didn't see anything to be embarrassed or nervous about. He did manage to capture the hearts of the parent audience though, being the youngest and shortest child on the floor. He had every move completely wrong, but he did them with such effort that even the instructor couldn't bring herself to correct him.

Mason and I are in the middle of Alice in Wonderland. I'm really enjoying reading it to him, he thinks Alice is "A silly girl, and not so smart". I'm looking forward to the movie too! Speaking of movies, I took my big boys on a date to see G-force. Horrible, horrible horrible.

We're home, we're home, and we finally got our internet issues squared away (somewhat). Vacation was wonderful, but after the first few days it just flew by. We spent a day in Saugatuck before joining the rest of the family and then enjoyed the beach, some shopping, a day at Michigan Adventure and even a dinner without the kids. All of the adults took a turn preparing dinner, although grandpa called pizza night early on. Ashton and Leo were best buds all week, but had to be separated at night time so they would actually sleep. Mason monopolized whatever adult's time he could with endless games of war, basketball, corn hole and even pac man. Blake looked on as Louisa marched around the house and ate more than Leo and Ashton put together. I guess he is not much of a follower because he is still stubbornly using all four limbs and eating just about nothing. Louisa is a beautiful little charmer, your best friend until dad or mom comes into view. We got to celebrate her birthday together, and she especially enjoyed all of the applause she recieved. Whew!

Now it is time to focus on back-to-school, I have started shopping Mason's supply list (who knew first graders needed flash drives?) and I have to evaluate the clothing situation. Vacation bible school is coming up soon, our last adventure of the summer.

Our weekend was a lot of fun but over too fast. Friday we had dinner with Uncle Rome, Suepy, and Mimi at the Blue Nile in Ann Arbor. That dinner made me wish there were always three extra set of helpful hands around. It's always more smooth when the kids are outnumbered.

Saturday we spent the day at the lake with Grandma and Papa, Uncle Mark, Uncle Dick, Aunt Jeanette and lots of Sean's cousins. The boys had a great time despite the weather. They swam (brrrrr...) tubed, canoed and pretended to kayak.

Yesterday we were L-A-Z-Y, only getting dressed in time for a cookout with friends. We had to leave before we wanted too, but squeezed in some sparklers before we did.

Now relax.

We did it all! I am still amazed, but we managed to do everything that we wanted to this weekend, with minimal meltdown. Saturday was the pool, Brianna's party, and a mad dash home to let the boys go to the bathroom before heading out to see the fireworks. I wish I had it on video, Ashton was ecstatic. Each firework was the first all over again, he had a wonderful time. Blake pointed at the sky, and fortunately didn't get scared by the noise.

Today we went to the Crosby Art Festival, and had a wonderful time. We didn't see much art, but the boys made some of their own to take home.

Now I need to sleep.

What we do when there is nothing to do

Summer Camp started yesterday (hallelujah) and it was good. After being delayed for three days we were all very happy it finally began. Mason loved his math enrichment class, and I am so relieved. He babbled on and on about math (it's every where! There is more to it than you think!) and Mrs. Knapp on the way home yesterday. He also loved swimming, and especially loved that he got to go, but Ashton didn't. Ash had a good time too, but the best benefit of camp for him is, by far, the nap he gets when he's there. He was happy and well rested until bedtime. That's another story.
for the first three camp-free days of the week we were going a little stir crazy. we made it to the park once, we ate lots of Popsicles (it was hot!) and we worked on our garden. We worked with beads, play dough, and Legos. I introduced the boys to the first season of The Muppet Show, which they LOVED. And when I ran out of ideas, the boys filled in the gaps with things like this:

Tonight we are celebrating making it through the week with a kid-free dinner out. Tomorrow is filled with P's; the pool, Brianna's party and then home to watch fireworks at the pow-wow. Hopefully we can find time for a nap in there.

Making Lemonade

Our plans got scrapped when the Wiz called and told us that due to wind and the possibility of thunderstorms, we would NOT be flying in a hot air balloon today. You have never seen such pitiful looks, such quivering lower lips! The boys had kept our big daddy-day surprise a secret for so long, and then to have the double disappointment of Mason spilling the beans (spitefully, not accidentally) and then the whole thing being cancelled, it was almost too much for the kids to take.
We made the best of a disappointing situation though, and packed up the crew plus P to spend the afternoon at the pool. Blake went swimming for the first time, and Mason and Peyton were "lifeguards" for the day. Ashton realized that he was tall enough to walk in the shallow end, and he was entertained by walking the length (back and forth, back and forth) of the pool from then on.

When we got home we took out balloon-intended picnic backpack and had a feast in the backyard. We had ciabatta, many kinds of cheese, salami, date-cake, dried figs, artichoke-garlic spread and did I say cheese? We ended the party on a sweet note with some squares of intense dark chocolate and then called it a night.

Not the event we had planned, but we are all happy, tired, satisfied and very grateful for our wonderful dad. The balloon will wait.

Back to One

Our week has been full, although not as full as I had planned. We never made it to see Uncle Rome, but we did picnic at the splashpad, visit the library (which now has a copy of Aunt Arika's book!), spend a morning at Island park and a lot of time with friends.

We sprinkled, tended our "bechtable" garden and enjoyed visits from both Mimi and Grandpa.

We said goodbye to our last two Triops, and Abby became our one and only pet once again.

Today we are looking forward to a summer-casual dinner party with friends, shirts and shoes optional for the kids. Tomorrow is the beginning of two days of dad-celebration. Day one starts with a massage and ends with our very exciting surprise (please stay away, rain) and day two is all about golf and a little time off from being daddy.

We all had a wonderful time, and there will be naps all around today. If you want to see more pictures before I get around to uploading them, check out Ehrika's fantabulous slide show of the party.
Mason and Ashton both adored their short week of camp. Golf camp was a huge success, Mason came home correcting Sean's swing and bragging about his putting. Being with the big boys was a treat for him, some of the players were *gasp* teenagers.
We have a week off before summer camp at St. Joes begins, and I am planning a lot of little trips. I think we will visit Hidden Lake Gardens, the Splash Pad, and Island Park, and Uncle Rome. Keep them busy, that's my strategy!

Survival of the fittest

We've made it through the first week of summer vacation, but the Triops have been less fortunate. I think we are down to two, but it may be three, the water is too murky to tell for certain. Each morning Mason asks "Has another Triops passed by?"
I am working on a way to force the boys to nap...they are in a vicious no-nap cycle that ends in meltdown and begins with 5:45 a.m. mornings. Short of drugs, I'm not sure how to solve the problem. Ash would sleep if I had 45 minutes to devote to rubbing his belly like they did at school (spoiled child!). Blake just needs a walk around the block, but the older boys are not always willing to accompany me, so he has to be content with nursing-induced power naps that range from 5-15 minutes. Mason may be a lost cause in the napping arena.
The boys did make it to the library, the pool and the park this week, even though it felt like we were home around the clock. They played in their new wiggly-worm sprinkler yesterday, enjoyed a family bike ride today, and had a lot of baths. Ashton got a haircut that is cute because it emphasizes his face and his notorious expressions, but also not so cute because I did it; and, well, I'm not a hairstylist. Blake got his first big noggin-bruise, just in time for the big birthday party. He also cut another tooth, and is in a fantastic mood after both.
I am thankful that next week brings our first week of summer camp. Mason will go to golf camp from 9-12 on Tuesday,Wednesday, and Thursday, and Ash has little sprouts at the Center on Tuesday and Thursday.
I plan to nap during all of those times.

Here is a picture of us NOT swimming at the water park yesterday, because we didn't go due to rain. We visited the Hands-On Museum instead and discovered all sorts of things we never knew were there. By the time we were done, the weather was sunny and hot, perfect for the water park. Oh well, maybe next week? We ate lunch at Zingermans; an event in it's own right, and all three boys fell asleep on the way home. At the same time. it was something I'll remember for a long time...

Today we ran errands to get out of our dreary, rainy indoor funk. I took all three boys to goodwill, the post office, and By Nature. Then we spent time at the local library, where Mason proudly got his own library card. We checked out more books on CD (Magic Tree House) and some DVDs (The Magic School Bus), and a few books for good measure. I have my fingers crossed that outdoor play will be possible this afternoon, or at the very least the grass dries up for Ashy's final soccer game. Keep your fingers crossed!

Our Friend, the Farmer

Today was the last soccer game for Mason, and our first trip to Tecumseh's farmer's market. We stocked up on some of our seasonal favorites, like green garlic and Swiss chard, but also decided to try our hand at growing some veggies of our own. We got some plants from our friends at Needle Lane Farms, and Ashton and I dug holes, made Popsicle-stick markers and caged tomatoes. Cross your fingers, my thumbs are far from green.
We aren't getting a farm share this year, but Sean signed us up for "farm delivery". I thought he only meant milk, and was expecting an old leathery man in overalls to deliver it. Instead, a young (our age, that's young, right?) fresh-faced farmer named John came to the door and invited us out to see his truck. His "truck" turned out to be a mobile-farm of sorts, a refrigerated van carrying everything from milk to veggies to freshly killed chickens. The boys were thrilled, and hopped right in the back uninvited to explore. John had cheese samples and mushrooms to try out, and we ended up with milk, cream, butter, cheese, (he is a master cheese-maker) eggs, and a chicken. I am so excited, hopefully this is a sign of things trending away from super-center groceries and mass produced, shipped-all-over-the-world food. Who would have thought we would be back to the practice of milk delivery? The milk my boys drank today was from a cow that was milked this morning, and the farmer that delivered it knows all of their names. It doesn't get any better than that!

Sean and Blake got some time alone while the boys and I went to see UP! this afternoon. We LOVED it. Ash was glued to the screen, and both boys giggled throughout.

A "Grader"

Yesterday was the last day of school, and this morning was the end-of-year picnic. Mason is officially a "grader" as he calls it. He had a wonderful kindergarten year, but is also a little nervous about the unknown that is First grade. He will have class all day, have to sit at a desk, do homework, and wear a uniform. This is the big time! Ashton has blossomed into an amazing little boy, and has grown so much over the year it is amazing. While we picnicked Sean and I looked over some of the boys schoolwork, and the things they have accomplished this year are mind boggling. I don't tend toward tears at milestones, I was dry-eyed at the first days of school and the pre-primary to kindergarten transition. The personal letters from the teachers to each boy threatened to change that though, I thought I was going to sob a little over lunch. It is a wonderful feeling to know your children's teachers love them and see them as you do. Good-bye school, HELLO SUMMER!!!

Today was Mason's last soccer game at St. Joes. I'm going to miss the after-school activity, the games he plays with his classmates are much more action packed and entertaining than the Saturday-morning ones. Ash has three more "games", and Mason has one before soccer is officially finished for the season.
Four of us are very excited for our trip this weekend, our heads are already in Saugatuck. We managed to snag a house on the beach, and have lots of fun activities planned around being on it. We are packing the kites, the baby pool, the sparklers, the Frisbees and the sand toys. This will be Blake's second trip to our "happy place" (as we call it) but I'm pretty sure he doesn't remember the first. Grandma and Papa are going to join us for some of our mini vacation, and the boys are excited to show off "their lake Michigan". Thank you to our bestest friends for taking over our zoo in our absence. They have bravely signed on to handle Abby, Black, White, and all of the nameless triops (I think there are about ten in all, and yes, they have three eyes).
In other news, we are continuing our culinary adventures and are in a reading frenzy. We have tried fig spread, prosciutto, arugula and sunflower seed pesto, and ...dum dum dum...liverwurst. Homemade granola bars are up next, with soy-nut butter (sounds awful, I know) and brown rice syrup (again, awful) hopefully they will make a good breakfast. Surprisingly, the best reviews went to the liverwurst, Blake particularly loved it. Mason and I are flying through the Spiderwick Chronicles, we're on book 4, and after we finish 5 I think we will get the audio version to "re-read" them.

They do like each other, sometimes! Catching rainbows in the sprinkler.

There is nothing going on, and at the same time so much that it makes my head spin. We have been playing soccer, watching rainy-day movies (Milo and Otis, which I, for one, found a little strange) hatching Triops (they have three eyes, you know; just ask They Might Be Giants), learning new words, trying new foods and enjoying being outside (welcome back, sprinkler!).

The boys got new Crocs, a sure sign that summer is on its way. Mason and Ashton pretended to be caterpillars; then worms, then snakes, and finally dill pickles, and spent a lot of time playing in empty boxes. We tried Ugli fruit, though Mason said he had tried it before with Mimi, and summed it up nicely for us: 'like an orange, but with more sour' and broccoli slaw and polenta casserole, pasta with anchovy paste (Blake LOVED this) and some dried apricots dipped in chocolate and encrusted with pistachios. I love this never-ending experiment/excuse to buy new and lovely-sounding foods.

We are all looking forward to Kid's Day tomorrow and even more so to our beloved annual trek to Saugatuck for Memorial Day. Our plan is to wake up early and hop in the car with jammies still on. I am looking for a traveling-in-the-car friendly breakfast to dole out on the way (any ideas? Pop-Tarts are on my never-ever-ever list)

Tuesday is the big day for Arika (!) I want to mention it now, because it will be that long at least until I can make it to the basement to post again. I am as proud as if I actually had something to do with her success. Buy her book, it is as amazing as she is. I only wish I could claim a blood relation and not just a legal one. But that would be a little weird then, wouldn't it?

This was the best Mother's Day to date. The boys spoiled me thoroughly, and I have to say I took advantage. They made me breakfast, let me sleep (until almost 7:00!) and showered me with cards, drawings and affection. The best part was my surprise- Sean is taking me skydiving! I have always wanted to go, and I can't wait!
We spent hours at the zoo, and managed to time it so that we were on our way out as the crowds began to file in. The rest of the day was lazy and relaxed, exactly as I wanted it. I hope all you mothers enjoyed your day as much as I enjoyed mine.

Gastronomic Exploration

I have been reading this wonderful book about a chef-mom, her four children and all of the wonderful recipes that accompany, shape and spice their lives. I am inspired to work harder at expanding the boys' palates. Mason and Ashton are good eaters, I think, but I do fall into menu ruts and run out of ideas for our usual vegetable suspects. We have tried a few new things this week, with mixed results.
Our first experiment was a whole coconut, which I was sure the boys would love. They loved that eating it required the use of a hammer, but it was downhill from there. None of us liked the coconut water, and only Mason and I liked the meat. Our next treat was artichokes. The boys love the hearts from a can, but have never had the whole vegetable, scraping away at the meaty parts of each butter-bathed leaf with their teeth like I remember doing as a kid. This was a winner; it was fun to do together and it involved lots of butter. Ashton was iffy on the leaves but loved the heart, it was a joy to watch him eat it. Today I made cheese, which Mason LOVED, and the rest of us thought was just too plain. It was easy and fun to make though, and I am already planning my next batch in my head (much more salt) which the kids will help me make.
I'm not sure what to try next, but monk fish, anchovies and soba noodles are on my list thanks to Franklin's book.
Blake is getting in on the experimentation as well. He has eschewed all baby food and is instead subsisting on whatever he can manage from our plates. Salmon, steak, pinto beans, feta cheese, broccoli, tomatoes, and pancakes are all things he just loves. I have been using up all of the baby food by sneaking it into the pancakes (the boys are none the wiser) so in a roundabout way he is eating some baby food after all.

So much has happened that I don't know where to start! Swimming has come and gone, and Mason 'graduated' to level three. Ashton spent most of his swim time squirting his coach in the face and wrapping her around his finger (he is good at that). We opted out of another session because it is just too much activity with school and soccer, but we will pick it up again in June. Soccer is in full swing, Tuesdays being our hurry-scurry day when both kids play and Blake and I are, as ever, simply along for the ride.
We had a great time with Blake on our weekend getaway, our friend's little girls just doted on him the entire visit. He seems to enjoy being the center of attention. Meanwhile, the boys enjoyed a weekend with Mimi that was chock-full of activity. They saw a Mud-Hens game, did Raiku at the 577 foundation (you can view their masterpieces on my mantle) and were spoiled completely. The most wonderful part was that the boys were really good when we got home, they forgot all about the post-Mimi visit crankies.
The garage sale was a success, and I am so glad it's over! I still have to clean up the leftover crap that didn't sell, but it feels good to have gotten rid of so much and made some cash to boot.

Rainbow Fish

Swimming started last night, and Ashton is in love. He was so happy to be there, and smiled with his blue lips through the whole first class. He cried when it was time to go, and I had to wrap him up like a burrito with his Lightning McQueen towel (thanks, Uncle Derk and Aunt Arika) and carry him to the locker room. He was only comforted when I reminded him that he could come back tomorrow. Mason was exhausted, I thought he might fall asleep on the two minute ride home. He went from soccer practice right to the pool, and was so ready for bed he didn't argue about foregoing story time when we got home. Blake really enjoyed playing at the pool, we'll see if he feels the same way all week!

I'll take sunny days packed to the brim over over wintry ones that are wide open any day.

We had too much planned this weekend, and that theme continues throughout the week.

Our long-awaited sleepover was Friday, and after several rounds of musical beds we were off to Mason's first soccer game of the season. This spring Mason's team is the Coyotes, and he was off to a great start, scoring the only goal of his game. We lost, but he played well and had a really great time on the field. Blake was a handful, I had to keep rescuing him when he crawled out onto the field after the kids. Finally I just strapped him into the stroller so I could actually watch the game.

Today was Logan's birthday party, and it was a doozy. Bouncys, cake, pizza, what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a pony ride, that's what. Ash loved being "a cowboy" and pet his pony the whole time he rode.

Tomorrow begins two weeks of every day swimming for both kids, then Tuesday Mason has his first game for Saint Joe's. Ashton doesn't start soccer until the 28th, thank God!

The boys will spend a whole weekend with Mimi while Mom and Dad take a trip, and they are looking forward to catching the Mudhens with her.

We are just settling down after a really wonderful birthday weekend. Ashton was indulged to his heart's content. He had a wonderful time at his birthday party. He spent the night with Meems, PJ and Mason and is now virtually swimming in all of his new Lightning McQueen treasures. I think we covered all the bases this year, Ash was a happy, busy birthday boy and I can't think of a thing that was missing.

Amber's surprise thirtieth was also a success, and it was a lot of fun to be a part of. We managed to make it home sober and in time to be Easter bunnies, which we were grateful for.

Easter was very special this year too, being Blake's first. He liked the Easter egg hunt, and tried to eat everything he found. The boys were allowed to eat their chocolate peter rabbits; between that and playing with new birthday toys they were busy the whole day.

Thank you, everyone, for helping us have such a truly happy weekend! The cake!

Monopoly Millionaires

Snow, Shmoe we are enjoying our spring break! The boys and I are settling into a good rhythm, and it only took until Wednesday. It goes like this: they are in charge, if I want a shower cartoons are in order, and when in doubt present them with a snack.
Today we headed to Chelsea to visit the Tree house, and discovered some of the boys' school buddies had had the same idea. Mason played with Henry and Ash played with Freddy, I played with Blake. I took a lot of pictures, but the camera is still upstairs, and I am afraid to go back up to get it. If Blake senses me I won't be able to get another free minute tonight.
After the tree house we had lunch with Sean and I taught the boys to play Monopoly (Jr., that is). I was impressed with Ash, he caught on quickly and the only upset was when he wanted to go to the "watch the fireworks" space and couldn't make the di roll the way he needed it too. I was surprised at how much fun it was , more than regular Monopoly because it doesn't take so loooooong to play.
They boys played outside a lot today too, and made "snow soup with what was left in the backyard- Yum!
Mason came into the house screaming that he had found a dead rat, and when I came out to look I realized that it was a baby bunny. Then we found another, and after Sean got home and started to bury them we discovered three more scattered around the yard. It was so upsetting, being so close to Easter, and just because they were so small and cute- not many animals are still adorable after they've been chewed on by a dog. The boys were pretty upset, and I was a little too, but then Mason said "Don't be sad, Mom, it's just the circle of life. Betcha didn't know I knew about the circle, did ya?" Abby didn't really eat the bunnies, I think she just wanted to play with them and was too enthusiastic (or maybe I'm being ridiculous- she just wanted to kill them, I really don't know) so I don't think the circle of life applies, but wise for a six year old nonetheless.

Spring Break is here

Today is the first day of our "Spring Break", but because we have no travel or events planned for the week, and the boys will be home all day every day until school starts again, it feels like the opposite of a break to me. It is definitely spring time though. We spent one day this week flying kites, another playing in the rain, and today the boys got their pictures taken with two fat little bunny rabbits for Easter.
The pictures were a surprise, a patient of Sean's made us an appointment and told us after the fact, but they were very cute and the boys enjoyed the bunnies.

A weekend away

Blake and I had a wonderful weekend away and were spoiled rotten the whole time. Good food (I'm spoiled for regular bagels after Arika's homemade), fun with the kids, and full-blown spring were the headlines of our Philly weekend. Our return was met with grey skies and snow, but also with a very happy car full of boys.
Blake squealed with delight when he saw the boys, then cried all of the way home from the airport because the was so out of sorts. Mase and Ashton we delighted with their travel-gifts, I am rationing the pretzels so they will last through the week. Mason took the liberty-bell replica that Leo chose for him and his brother to school. When I told him the story of the bell he said "that makes nonsense to me".
I expected the boys would have a good time while I was gone, which they did, but what I didn't expect was all of the work they did around the house. Sean, who to my knowledge has never operated our washer and dryer, washed four loads of laundry. He even folded them and put them away! He washed dishes, he cleaned out the refrigerator (I'm talking scrubbing, people) and he cleaned out the kitchen cabinets. The boys spent an afternoon cleaning out the garage and working in the yard, all on top of the fun things they got to do, like dinner-and-a-movie with grandma and playing at the park.
I'm going to have to go away more often- anybody up for a girls weekend?

The three R's

Today has done wonders for us all! We are renewed, re-energized and relieved that winter seems to be finally waning. I was outside every possible minute with the boys today. Blake took 4 (4!) walks today, one with me, one with Sean, one with both of us and one with Mason, Ashton, Grandpa and I. After school we spent close to two hours at our very-busy favorite park, and I am amazed again at the energy contained inside small boys. Blake fell deeply asleep in my arms at the park, the fresh air and excitement finally wore him out.

Without the ability to post pictures or videos I am less interested in updating the website, especially now that the weather is so gorgeous. So many times a day I think "Oh, I have to write about that" but then the event, achievement or adorable mispronunciation is lost...

I can tell you though, that:

Blake has an "official" top tooth with its neighbor close behind
Ashton has a nasty-looking shiner in it's purply-green stage from tripping and catching his eye on the portable adjusting table in the basement
Mason has one more basketball game to go before soccer consumes us
Ashton's birthday is ALL we're talking about right now

That's all I can think of right now in new news from us. My new Brain, Child magazine arrived yesterday, and as is my habit I have been completely absorbed in it every spare moment I have (nursing, waiting for the boys to emerge from the school building). A Standing Ovation

Today was Ashton's last day at Little Dribblers, the YMCA basketball program. We almost didn't make it because Mason is feeling feverish, and I didn't want to bring him to the Y. Sean saved the day, suggesting that Mase come hang out with him until the office closed. Mason had a great time "working" with dad, he even got to assist in the adjusting rooms. Meanwhile, Ash and Blake and I headed out into the downpour, with our trusty Lightning McQueen 'brella to keep us (or just Ash) dry. It was a good evening, we practiced passing drills, the kids played sharks and minnows, and Blake ate some bananas.

The best part though, was the presentation of participation certificates. I have NEVER seen a little boy look so proud. Each child stood up as his name was called and the boys, spectators and coaches clapped for him. Such a little thing, but as a three year old, to have a whole gym clapping for YOU, well, that just takes the cake!

The boys got 'special' treats, which were (if it's possible) even more junky than the regular snacks they give the kids. There I was in the Y parking lot looking like a looney tunes as I tried to surreptitiously squeeze out two-thirds of Ashton's Kool-Aid jammers drink pouch before I give it to him. The other snack was a package of Chips Ahoy cookies- what a way to refuel little bodies after they exercise! I am always torn after snacks are distributed; I hate to throw away an unused, perfectly good food item, even if it is crap, but I also don't want to let the boys eat it. My usual solution is to give them a tiny portion (Ash thinks that there are only two fruit snacks in a package) and let the rest sit in my car until stale enough to be thrown away with out guilt.

Our week and weekend was a whirlwind, so many fun things happened, and now it's is next week and I'm ready to catch my breath. Conferences were so good this semester, I had tears in my eyes driving home because I am so proud of both Mason and Ashton. I felt like driving them straight to the spotted cow for an ice cream treat after, but restrained myself.
We were all so excited to go to the Mommy-son dance, and I decided that I should wear a dress more often, because Ash was flabbergasted. He didn't know what to make of it, and kept telling me "you look preddy, Mommy". Dinner was good, although I made a mental note to work on table manners with the boys. At the dance I was pulled in two different directions most of the night. Mason wanted to play games, and Ash just wanted to DANCE! He loved the music, and tried so hard to master the electric slide. Eventually the lights, loud music and mass of screeching boys got to be to much for Ashton, and we had to high-tail it out of there.
Saturday Sean had a seminar, and the boys and I met Mimi and PJ at Mason's basketball game. Thank god for Mimi and PJ, I'm not sure it would have been such a success had they not been there. Sometimes it takes three adults to care for two children. Mason had a wonderful game, and was very tuckered out by the end.
Peyton invited Mase to celebrate her birthday at Mongolian barbecue, and it is the first time EVER that he has not put up a fight about getting into handsome-boy clothes (as we call them). He had a great time with his favorite girl, and was so proud of himself for going on his own. Ashton felt a little left out, so we made up a batch of crepes with fresh fruit and yogurt for his dinner. Viola! problem solved.

Sean decided to stay home Sunday (yay!) and we enjoyed the most wonderful, unplanned family day out. We went to Toledo and visited the mall to play and walk and escape the rain. We found some early-reader books for Mason, and had lunch at Aladdin. Blake enjoyed the restaurant as much as the rest of us, eating a whole jar of sweet potatoes as we ate our lunch. He is doing a fantastic job eating, and had his first turkey meat yesterday for dinner.

I love technology, I hate technology

I love my camera, I hate that all of my pictures are trapped inside because I can't get the *#@! cable to work. I have tried everything, from buying a new cable to loud expletives. Since none of my methods are working you're going to have to take my word for it that the boys' basketball pictures are so adorable. Ashton loves "b-ball" night so much, and he is just so happy out on the court. Driving to Adrian at dinner time with all three boys by myself is always worth it when I see the joy on his face during "practice". Mason took advantage of his extra court time this week, dribbling and shooting baskets the whole time we were at the Y. His dribbling is really looking good, and he made 5 baskets one right after another, I was astonished. He does well in the games, but last night he was in a zone. It helps that there were no other players in his way, of course, but it amazed me all the same.
Blake finally got excited about baby food, he ate an entire jar of sweet potatoes today. He actually opened his mouth on his own instead of our usual m.o., where I trick him with a spoon or toy he wants to chew on and then pop the bite into his mouth. I hope it wasn't a fluke-feeding, I'm looking forward to a little less nursing.
Tomorrow we get to sleep in (ha) because there is no school due to conferences. I LOVE parent teacher conferences! I'm not sure if it's the Montessori method or my awesome kids (or that they want to keep the tuition coming) but I have yet to hear a negative word about either of the boys. If you're going to brag about anything, it should be your kids, right?
Friday is my big date with the boys, I would love to say that I will post have pictures, but I probably won't.

Or should that be "Woka-Woka?" Anyway, I'm living with two little hams, and potty humor gets top billing in this club. The boys have been full of giggles this weekend, most of them still under the bar set by slapstick humor. As hard as I try to fight the potty-talk and "private-part" humor, I am resigned to our truth of farts = funny. I guess it's part of a living in a male dominated household, and judging by the majority of clips on funniest home videos or the millions made by movies like The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Dumb and Dumber, the fart jokes keep delivering well after Kindergarten. I think it's just yuck, but I still can't bring myself to squash little-boy giggles, whatever they were inspired by. A half hearted "Enough ALREADY!" is the most I can muster, it's an unwinnable battle, really.

Mase had another great game Saturday, he played against one of his best school buddies. It was fun watching the game and the smaller game-inside-the-game of Mason and Wade dancing in and out of the other players, trying to avoid being guarded by one another. They spun, they weaved, they wore each other out completely. When we got home Mason disappeared, and we discovered him fast asleep in the top bunk, where he stayed for two hours. Ash took full advantage of his time alone with Mom and Dad (Blake too, of course).

Today was errand day. We got groceries and tried to find some bigger clothes for Blake, but ended up with an outfit for Louisa instead. Little girl clothes are just irresistible! Grandma and Papa surprised us with a visit when we got home, and Blakey was a happy little guy for all the attention he got. Ash charmed Grandma with his mastery of the written word, and Mason kept Papa sequestered for most of the visit. The boys are counting down the days until the Mom and Son dance at the community center. We decided to hit the Street (Evans Street) for dinner before hand, truth be told that is half of the appeal for all three of us.

Baby Iorn Chef: Nori challenge

In my tireless quest to get Blake interested in real food and to give my self a break from nursing twenty seven times a day, I decided to try feeding him Nori. He loves to eat paper, and the dried, roasted seaweed snack is the closest edible thing I could find. Leo used to eat it, and Louisa seems to enjoy it so it was worth a try.

It was going well at first, he was delighted with the offering and attacked it enthusiastically. Things quickly went downhill, however, as the seaweed snack dissolved into little globs of green goop and/or sticky flecks that attached themselves to every available surface. I'm not sure how much of it actually made it past his mouth, it seemed to just keep working its way back out again. The smell was another problem. Although not bad in its dried form, after it gets worked on for a while it stinks, well, like fish. I had to dismantle the highchair to get at all of the goops and particles. Having no time to bath Blake before pickup for the boys, I was left with a faintly fishy smelling baby.

That time of year again...

when you have six single mittens per child and one hat, if you're lucky. When the sun is shining so beautifully a walk around the neighborhood seems like just the thing, until you step out the door and realize it's still just 15 degrees. When everyone is ready for spring to come and help with the chronic short tempers.
We are all getting antsy, and as Ash so succinctly put it "SICK OF NO" (snow). Blake is the exception. He is completely happy playing in the house, because he has never played outside. Watching him has been one of our winter-day diversions, and he is doing a good job of keeping us entertained. He is spitting when he's angry, clapping when he's happy, trying to pull himself up and into boxes of toys and trying to eat paper. Still no crawling, although he is occasionally doing the rocking-on-all-fours thing.
B-ball has been our other distraction. Ash would rather work on the finesses than the fundamentals, as you can see here. He's going to be a globetrotter who can't dribble.

We can't be too mad at the weather, it is Michigan, after all.
Fortunately we got out of the house yesterday and spent some time with uncle Rome. The boys had a great time, but the adults all have sore knees.
We met Papa and Amber in Adrian for Mason's game this morning and are now just glad to not have anywhere to go.

Bball wears a boy out. Ashton is getting very good at twirling the basketball around in a circle on the gym floor, also at body surfing on it. He spent a good amount of time yesterday trying to dribble between his legs after one of the coaches did it, and just generally had a good time. Mason stayed home with Grandpa and played K'nex, and enjoyed having him all to himself. It was much easier for me to have only the two little boys- thank goodness for Grandpa!

Dad's back and the boys are happy. They got gifts and then got down to the serious business of roughhousing. While he was gone:

Suepy came and watched Mason play basketball. The Bobcats won with only three players, and Mason had a wonderful time playing. He really is a joy to watch!

Blake turned 8 months old, and is growing out of everything in his closet.

Blake and I went to Toledo yesterday and met Mimi for lunch, which was an unexpected treat. He entertained us by tossing every toy, spoon, bib or fill-in-the-blank on the floor so we could pick it ip and return it to him.

When did Valentine's Day get bigger than Halloween? This is a small sample of the loot that came home with me today. There were no less than 50 valentines per boy, some from the morning classes and some from the afternoon. Mason had a shoebox and three bags of stuff. There was all manner of goodies; pencils, playdoh, heart-shaped slinkys, feathers (?) cups, stickers and the ever-popular tattoos. And candy, of course. So much candy that it rivaled our Halloween take, even taking into consideration the stuff that I scarfed before we got home.

Ashton will never know!

I enjoyed reliving the fun of Pop Rocks with Mason, but the in-school parties were junk fests. Our "lovey-dovey day salad" made with all red fruits and pink yogurt was probably a tough sell next to cookies and heart-shaped jell-o jigglers. No wonder they were less than enthusiastic about the valentines day books I bought for them. Sheesh!

I love it because I can see his face! His little chubby cheeks are accentuated. He loves it because he is getting a lot of attention from it right now. Mason got his hair cut too, but only trimmed around his neck, ears and eyebrows. I won't post it because he was a little snot in the barber chair, whining and complaining the whole time, and it turned out a little bit crooked. I can't blame Ben, because Mason really was a piece of work. He looks a bit like a Beetle, but in a good way. I just have to get at him with my scissors to fix it a little bit...

It is a cold and kind of BLAH week, the bright side being that every little event is so much more welcome. Basketball was great, three-year old dribbling around cones and bounce-passing is a lot of fun to watch. Ashton's participation and mood covered every spot on the spectrum, but at the end he announced: "Myme had a good time, Mommy." Totally worth it.

Tomorrow I get to read to the boys at school, and we are celebrating Sean's birthday. He is taking the boys to see Coraline (I am really jealous, I think it looks good) and then we will have cake- another Better Than Sex cake*.

Saturday the boys get to spend the night with Grandma and Papa after Mason's first game, and then we will celebrate Sean's birthday again when we pick them up on Sunday. We like to stretch out our birthdays around here!

Mason has been so busy with school, right now his class is working on saving a part of the coral reef. Each child has to do helper jobs around the house to earn pennies, and then they will count and roll them in class. The goal is $75.00- that's a lot of pennies. He is also making leaps and bounds in reading, we've been working on the sight words a lot at home. He brings home a new book from school every day to read to Sean and I, and after he has read 30 he earns a book from Linda, his teacher. Both classes (Montessori and Kindergarten) are preparing for big V-day parties. We have been wrapping shoe boxes for a couple of weeks now for the kids to decorate. Both kids finished all of their classroom valentines last night, and we will do homemade ones for family this weekend. Ash is going to help me make a red and pink salad for the party, watermelon and red apples and pink yogurt being the main ingredients. Sean will be out of town for lovey-dovey day, but I have plans to buy myself some chocolate and watch The Notebook. Only when he's away can I watch such a guilty romantic cheese fest movie. I can't wait!

Happy Anniversary, Sugar Booger

Tomorrow, anyway. I can't believe it's been five years; (yes, Mason is six) and I also feel like it's been much, much longer than that. Sean and I are having a limo pick us up and take us to the Martini Bar in Ann Arbor on Saturday, and then out to eat. And then, (who are we kidding), we'll be heading back home. I am so excited, I haven't ridden in a limo since high school prom. I even bought a new dress, actually two, because I can never decide in the store. Mason really wants to come with us, he doesn't understand why he can't celebrate an anniversary. I told him the fact that he never wants to get married makes it difficult.
Tomorrow is also Ashy's big bball day, he's excited to play, and excited to have "little hoops". I'm just excited that he is. His games are from 5:30-6:30, and in Adrian, the kind of timing that makes me wish I could be a Mickey-D's mom.
Sean has a patient that is a numerologist, and over the course of his last three appointments he presented his discoveries about all three boys. The quick-and-dirty is that Mason is potentially a clairvoyant, Ashton will be making the big bucks and Blakers is going to be our athlete, at least through the college level. I don't know anything about numerology, but my interest is piqued.

Basketball began yesterday, and I was thrilled to discover that all of the games begin at 10:30 or later. That means no scrambling in the morning, and that we can still make breakfast with the fam some of the time. The next two games are at 1:00 at the YMCA's upper court, if anybody wants to join us. I will post the whole schedule, but I'm too lazy to go get it from the car right now.
Mason went home with his buddy Wade after practice and had a great time playing over there for most of the afternoon. He was a zombie when he came home, and we snuggled up together and watched an episode of "Bindi the Jungle Girl". Has anyone else ever seen this show? If so, do you think it is weird that it regularly features her dad, Steve Erwin (of Crocodile Hunter fame and killed by a sting ray)? I think it's a little creepy, because she introduces him in the shows segments, and it feels like she's the victim of a big cover up. "Daddy's just traveling for work, Bindi".
Today we are preparing for the game-day festivities. My attitude has changed from extreme irritation to resignation. Why fight it? I am in charge of wings, Sean gets guacamole duty and the boys are gathering up all of the footballs in the house to play alongside the games. I will watch the commercials!

Snowdays and sugarhighs

Wednesday we had a snow day, but we didn't find out until we had already gotten dressed and ready for school. I had to drive into Adrian to run an errand for Sean, so we braved the treacherous roads instead of snuggling up in our PJs, which is what all of us really wanted to do. The boys were very good sports, and I decided to reward them with a doughnut. Shocking, I know. We went to Lev's in town and I let each boy pick out any kind they liked, but their eyes never made it farther than the sprinkled glazed doughnuts. Such joy over a circle of sugar and yeast!

Sean's massage chair was delivered on Tuesday, and so for the rest of our snowy mini-vacation the boys played in the gigantic box that it came in. Who needs toys when you have a box, right? They turned it into their own little living quarters, and brought the baby dolls in to nap and play.

Yesterday was "person-night" at school. Mason chose Papa, and Ash chose Grandma. We met them over at St. Joe's (the boys in their PJ's) and for the next hour Grandma and Papa got to see firsthand everything that the boys are working on in their classrooms. Mase took Papa to his pre-primary room, his kindergarten room, the lunchroom, the after-school care room (which he doesn't go to), the bathroom, on the stairs and in the elevator. Ashton showed Grandma the brown prisms and pink cubes in Linda's room, and that's where they stayed.

Today the boys are going to go swimming with daddy after school, and tomorrow is Mason's basketball tip-off.

Gotcha!

A little fuzzy, but I'm thrilled nonetheless. Blakey's teeth are very cute, and also very crooked. They form a "V" pointing into his mouth. Crooked now, crooked later, it's all beside the point. With two former thumb-sucking brace-face parents all three of the boys are likely going to do some time in the orthodontist's chair.

We had another milestone this week- the first semi-solid poop. Yay Blake! Exciting times, exciting times.
