Mad Monday

Mason woke up in a MOOD- all of his excitement this weekend finally caught up with him at the most appropriate time, Monday morning. He was just exhausted and weepy, and wanted to climb back into his cozy-rosy bed. I can't say I blame him, but a meltdown like that is a heck of a way to start a week. He managed to pull himself together by the time we reched school, and has been chipper since I picked him up. Mason's class started a unit on outer space, which really interests him, and had a special guest teacher from Iraq visiting the classroom this morning. It's hard to remember that you're grumpy with so many interesting things happening.
The special guest sparked a lot of conversation about that biggie of a topic, W-A-R. I have to admit that I really struggled with how to explain the whole mess to him (without including my own hateful feelings towards our devil of a president) in terms he can comprehend. I ended up showing him where Iraq was on his globe and simplifying things to the extreme, i.e., "War is when two or more countries are fighting, and people in both countries get hurt and killed". His inevitable "Why are we fighting?" was met with my honest "I really don't know, bud" and I really, really don't.
After Ashy's really long nap we went to the library and picked up armloads of great books on the boy's current interests; sharks, snakes, lions, and outer space. They have been pouring through them since we got home, and coloring the pages from the childrens section while I get dinner ready. We managed to salvage our Monday- get ready, rest-of-the-week, here we come!
