Today was Blake's baptism, and it was definitely the baptism of a third child. The poor little guy was rushed to the church by a irritable, sleep deprived family. The boys were still worn out from a full day at the water park, and from getting up at dawn. The buzzing in my brain from days of poor sleep is starting to feel almost normal, and getting the family around and to the church seemed a hurry-scurry affair, even for the 11:00 service. Blake was greeted by a smaller gathering of friends and family than the older boys' baptisms, and it shrunk again when we left to celebrate over lunch. Poor third child! Nothing is quite as momentous the third time around.
Blake's baptism does take the cake in one area though- it will definitely be the most memorable of the three. Who will be able to forget Mason running around in front of the congregation barefoot, putting his hands in the baptismal water and climbing the altar? Who could forget Ash bonking his head on a pew during the service and drowning out the pastor with his cries? Or shaking the paper palm tree left over from VBS so hard it looked like it would topple over on him? The icing on the cake was being kicked out of the nursery just as I was about to feed Blake. (Or maybe it was when when Ashton peed in the parking lot as the congregation drove past him on their way home, I'm split on that one.) Pastor Jacobs spoke to Sean after the service, and asked a lot of questions about churches in Tecumseh. I think he was wondering why we keep coming all the way out to his nice church. Poor man.
By the time we got our lunch everyone was able to relax and just enjoy being together. We had a great meal, and great company while we celebrated the man of the hour--Blake. Who was sleeping soundly.
