We have had a very full day today, my strategy when dad is gone is to keep them busy, busy, busy. It started off with Mason's soccer game, which was a little chillier than we would have liked. He team won 4-3, but it could easily have been the other way around, because both teams were full of very enthusiastic players. Mason got to play goalie, and he stopped two balls but let one past. I was worried he would be upset (his face just crumpled) but he handled it well and had a great time overall. We had a great cheering section for Mase, loudest of all was not mom but Mimi (who knew?) and Mason seemed to thrive on all of the attention. After soccer I tried in vain to get both boys to nap. Mason powered down but Ash is more stubborn than I give him credit for, and even with yawns punctuating every sentence he refused to close his eyes.
In the afternoon we decided to go and see Horton Hears a Who and we all love, love loved it. I had heard both good and bad reviews, but ended up enjoying it more than I've enjoyed a childrens' movie in a long time. Ashton bounced, clapped and sang along throughout the movie, watching him was enough reason to give Horton two thumbs up for me. Mason laughed so loud that we got pointed looks several times, but I couldn't ask him to tone it down; he was truly tickled. After the movie we ate dinner at Red Lobster at the boys request. I don't think I've eaten there in years, but it was a nice date with the two of them. They liked watching the lobsters "swimming", and impressed the chef by eating broiled fish and mounds of broccoli. Mason pronounced his meal "the best ever", and while I wouldn't go that far it was better than I was expecting.
Now we are in the middle of the bedtime battle, which seems to be getting worse every night. I may need to call my 15 year-old baby sitter for reinforcements...
